Almost two years ago now, Alta, the studio behind the popular multiplayer game A Township Tale, teased work on a follow-up, Alta: Project 2. Earlier this year, this project gained a name, Reave, garnering excitement for this new dark fantasy title. It now looks like a Meta Quest launch is just around the corner, slated to arrive in December.

What is Reave?

If you’ve not yet heard of Reave, this is a multiplayer-focused PvPvE extraction game. Very different from the open-world RPG that was A Township Tale, instead, you’re dropped into treacherous dungeons to loot and then fight your way out of them.

While there is a single-player element, Alta has designed Reave to be social, not only teaming up with folks to battle skeletons and other monsters, but also to hang out. Social space above ground offers a chance to trade with NPCs, select new skill tree abilities, and pick new quests to complete.

In teams of three, fending off some of the bigger enemy encounters isn’t as difficult as going solo. However, just because you’re in a team doesn’t mean to say they’re all trustworthy. When the ultimate aim is to maximise your loot and glory, that can come at the expense of others.

The Rise of Reave

As mentioned, Alta is best known for A Township Tale (2021), which took a more colourful approach to adventuring than Reave does. The RPG also required players to take up jobs like blacksmithing to maintain resources. Reave is a very different beast, apart from the collaborative multiplayer, of course.

Over the past year or so, Alta has released a series of monthly Devlogs detailing the game’s progress, as well as running a selection of playtests. This slow and steady approach has helped the team build significant interest in the upcoming game.

Launch Details

Currently, all we have to go on regarding the launch of Reave is its listing on the Horizon Store. This states a “December 2025” window for the multiplayer’s arrival, but Steam has no such current distinction. Considering Alta has released its final monthly Devlog of the year, that could be seen as an indication that the game is nearly upon us.
