The popular MR puzzle game Kartoffl has made its way to Apple Vision Pro, developer Breach has announced. Already available on a multitude of XR formats – including Meta Quest, PICO and PC VR – Kartoffl uses hand-tracking to have you guide a squad of ‘spuds’ through handcrafted puzzles.
What is Kartoffl?
As stated above, Kartoffl challenges players to guide a squad of clumsy but endearing “spuds” through more than 60 handcrafted puzzles. Using spatial interaction, players manipulate terrain and devices to help the potatoes survive their perilous journey.
Mechanically, Kartoffl draws strong inspiration from classic puzzle/strategy games like Lemmings and Pipe Mania. You don’t control the spuds directly. Instead, you place devices or elements in their path, manipulate the environment, and influence their movement so they can reach their destination safely. Because each spud “has a mind of their own,” part of the challenge comes from reacting to their behaviour, not just planning.
Kartoffl for Apple Vision Pro
Kartoffl originally released in 2022, but the new Apple Vision Pro version has been refined specially for the new headset. The game has been optimised for hand- and eye-tracking. On Apple Vision Pro, the game has been built for MR, which means you can see your real environment while interacting with the spuds and puzzles. This blend makes the game feel less isolating and more integrated into your surroundings, which could be especially appealing for VR newcomers or more casual players.
Kartoffl is considered a thoughtful VR puzzle experience. The game features cute spuds, clever level design, and a balance of challenge and accessibility.
