Bit Planet Games – the folks behind the hugely popular Ultrawings series – recently released Super RC earlier in October. An Early Access racing game for Meta Quest, the game arrived at a low entry price point. However, the studio has now embraced the current free-to-play (F2P) sweeping the Horizon Store.

Why F2P?

F2P games have been hugely popular on mobile for years, gradually making their way to flatscreen gaming and, most recently, VR. While there have been free games available on Meta Quest for years, the current trend in VR was cemented by 2022’s Gorilla Tag and, subsequently, Animal Company (2024).

The F2P drive has been most notable in multiplayer games, where the need to fill servers is crucial. And that’s essentially why Bit Planet Games chose to make Super RC F2P only two weeks after launch.

On its Discord server, the studio said: “In short, multiplayer is where this game truly shines after you’ve completed the single-player content. For that, we need players, and it seems the only way to survive in the new Quest ecosystem is to be F2P.”

So what about those players who have just bought the Early Access game? The post continues: “To our existing fans that supported us before now we know this might sting a bit so feel free to contact me and we can discuss this in further detail.” So it does seem the studio is open to addressing the issue. How remains to be seen.

What is Super RC?

Released on 8th October, Super RC is part racing game and part creative sandbox. In its Early Access form, players are able to unbox and build their own virtual RC cars, with the Turbo Jumper available to start them off. After which, there are over three hours of single-player races and trials, a creative sandbox mode to build your own tracks, and an 8-player online racing mode.

It’s that latter racing mode which will provide the longest replay factor, hence the F2P switch. Like all free games, Super RC’s revenue will come from additional content and DLC. There is already a selection of new RC cars to purchase, should you wish.

Latest Super RC Updates

It’s only been three weeks since Super RC launched for Meta Quest. Bit Planet Games has already released its first major update, addressing significant bugs across the board. Additionally, the Crawler add-on also arrived, providing players with an all-terrain vehicle and multiple official Crawler tracks packed with hills, rocks and more.

Bit Planet Games has a long history of supporting its VR titles, so we’d expect to see numerous patches and content updates as Super RC weaves its way towards a 1.0 launch.
