Cubism 5th Anniversary Update

What is Cubism?
Cubism is a minimalist VR puzzle game developed by solo developer, Thomas Van Bouwel. The core gameplay involves assembling increasingly complex 3D shapes out of colourful blocks. There are no timers or enemies. The experience is intentionally calm and meditative, focusing instead on spatial reasoning, precision, and satisfying visual design.
Over time Cubism has gained new features that exploit VR hardware more fully. In particular, the Meta Quest version supports hand tracking and mixed reality features. On Meta Quest 3 there’s been a dedicated update adding ‘Space Setup’ support so you can align puzzles on a real table or desk. There’s also a level‑editor that lets you build your own puzzles and share them other players (via sideloading).

Cubism has been very well received by the VR gaming community, and for good reason. It’s a simple concept that becomes very addictive. The goal of the game is to insert coloured blocks so that they fit perfectly within an outline that is presented in each level. Such a simple concept; but one that ramps up in difficulty very quickly.
In fact, Cubism recently made it into 131XR and XRSource’s top picks for the best puzzle games in VR. You can find out more about this in the video embedded below.
Cubism 5th Anniversary Update
While Thomas Van Bouwel has spent the past couple of years focused on developing his next game, Laser Dance, he still wanted to mark the fifth anniversary of Cubism with a small quality-of-life update on Meta Quest. The game also received support updates for the release of new hardware like the Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 3 headsets.
The 5th anniversary update includes:
- 5 new languages (Dutch, Portuguese, Italian, Polish & Russian)
- 7 new songs added to the soundtrack
- Improved readability of the menu in mixed reality
Under the hood, significant updates have also been made to the engine and rendering pipelines. This will help future-proof the game, so he can keep supporting it for the next five years of XR hardware. However, at present this update is not planned for SteamVR.
