Bethesda has one of the most interesting histories with VR of any major game publisher. The company embraced VR during the first major wave of consumer headsets, bringing some of its biggest franchises to virtual reality with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR. It also experimented with shorter VR-specific projects based on DOOM, Wolfenstein and Prey. Bethesda’s official VR output has largely stopped, but that hasn’t ended the story. The modding community has continued to bring some of the company’s biggest games into VR, including Morrowind, Oblivion Remastered, Starfield and Fallout: New Vegas. Some of these unofficial projects are considerably more experimental than Bethesda’s own releases, but they demonstrate just how well the company’s huge open-world games can work in a headset.
