Velociblaster has been getting a fair amount of attention in VR circles lately. As a raptor-themed multiplayer VR sci-fi shooter, you might expect as such. But now everyone can see what the fuss is all about, with the launch of a free alpha version of the game.

What is Velociblaster?

As stated above, Velociblaster is a raptor-themed multiplayer VR sci-fi shooter with unique flight locomotion. Developed by Space Age, the game sees you battling as sentient velociraptors wielding dual high-tech blaster cannons. Rocket thruster flight mechanics enable vertical combat and action-packed 360° midair dogfights.

“Early in development, the game started out as a VR movement prototype. I had an idea for a unique physics-based VR flight locomotion where rocket thrusters are built into your weapons (huge blaster cannons),” states Matt Foreman of Space Age. “I experimented with this a lot and discovered that it felt most comfortable to point the rocket thrusters downward instead of out the front or back of the weapon, so that when your hands are in a natural resting position you rise straight up. Then to fly directionally, you simply tilt your hands to point your rocket thrust (which is actually somewhat similar to using a helicopter joystick). The flight locomotion is super intuitive and “flowy.” It’s a brand new form of VR locomotion, and most people get the hang of it in less than 5 minutes.”

The story goes that millions of years ago the catastrophic asteroid missed Earth, allowing velociraptors to evolve and develop advanced technology. Now, they’ve taken to the skies to battle it out in high-stakes aerial combat. But honestly, who cares about the reason behind it? You’re playing as a flying velociraptor with guns. Talk about an easy sale.

Velociblaster Free Alpha

The public open alpha version of Velociblaster has just been released. Anyone with a Meta Quest or PC VR headset to play an early version of the game, which includes a Deathmatch game mode. The game currently features up to 16 players per server.

The Velociblaster alpha can be installed for free by visiting the game’s Discord server. More game modes are planned for the future, so it’s a good idea to join and see what’s coming.

Full Launch Plans

“Moving forward, the plan is to build the game alongside its community,” said Foreman. “We invite everyone to play the alpha and share feedback in the game’s Discord server. An early access launch is targeted for Q4 2025 (specific date TBD).”

While the Velociblaster free alpha is available now, it’s not currently known how long this will be for. An early access launch is also planned for Q4 2025, so we can expect significant updates prior to that.
