Shooting games in VR are nothing new. Neither are roguelikes. But a VR shooting roguelike where you’re bound to a wheelchair? That’s different. Quantum Threshold aims to deliver something new, and while it doesn’t nail the experience, with this review you’ll learn that it’s at least trying.

What is Quantum Threshold?

As stated above, Quantum Threshold is a roguelike shooter in which the player is bound to a wheelchair. Clearly designed for seated VR play, the player is able to maneuver through the use of controls mounted on the wheelchair. However, with this being a shooter, you don’t want your hands occupied by movement controls all the time. You’ll need to switch between movement and your firearms in order to survive. And surviving is most certainly a challenge.

Quantum Threshold Review

As you’ll learn in 131XR’s Quantum Threshold review, the game makes no bones about its level of difficulty. Maneuvering your wheelchair is a challenge in its own right. But couple that with random enemy placements and aggressive combat, and you’ll soon find yourself retreading familiar steps.

But of course, that’s the point of a roguelike, right? You’ll head back to your hub, upgrade your weapons and armour, and then back into the fray. Pushing further through the levels each time. Finding new power-ups, facing new enemies, and taking on new challenges.

In 131XR’s Quantum Threshold review, you’ll hear about why the game feels a little confused about how it wants to play. It constantly throws an unnecessary complication of slow movement with the need for you to return the enemy aggression. If you’re up for that challenge however, Quantum Threshold eventually reveals itself to be a rewarding challenge.
