The hugely popular VR exclusive GORN debuted back in 2018, and immediately made a name for itself. The hyper-violent slapstick approach to combat made for a game that worked wonders for both adrenaline rush gameplay and social media commentary. Now, with a new team at the helm, the sequel aims to capitalise on the success of the original. Find out in 131XR’s GORN 2 review if Free Lives has what it takes.
What is GORN?
As stated above, the original GORN launched way back in 2018. The game hit numerous VR platforms, including Meta Quest and PlayStation VR. It was an instant hit, thanks to the comedic interpretation of excessive violence and gore.
Underneath this however, was a solid combat simulator. According to publisher Devolver Digital, the ‘even more outrageous sequel pushes the humor, creativity and hemoglobin sliders to the max’.
“GORN 2 is GORN, but in an angry version. More weapons, enemies, arenas, traps, power-ups, and hilarious and perfectly over-the-top combat. If you love the original, but need a fresh dose of tragicomic carnage, GORN 2 will quench your bloodlust,” states the official press release.
GORN 2 Review
With the success of the original game, the expectations are high for GORN 2. More weapons, arenas, enemies and so on are all well and good. However, these are merely checkboxes to fill out. Realistically, you have to ask what GORN 2 can add to the formula outside of bigger numbers. And who’s best to ask? Why, our friends over at 131XR, of course!
In 131XR’s GORN 2 review (below), we learn that the game is more than just more. A brand new storyline, battling against relentless hordes of enemies in Endless mode or even creating your own arenas of destruction in Custom mode. GORN 2 has much more going for it than a few new weapons…
A New Team for a New GORN
The original GORN was developed by Free Lives. However, for GORN 2, we now have Free Lives and Cortopia Studios at the helm. This is a studio that has made its name with a handful of well-respected VR titles.
Cortopia worked alongside Free Lives to deliver a sequel that stays true to the feeling of the original, whilst still progressing the formula. The game has launched on Meta Quest headsets and PC VR, with a PSVR 2 version also in the works.
What’s Next for GORN 2?
As stated above, the PSVR 2 version of GORN 2 is on the way. But what happens after that? The game is undoubtedly primed for more content. New weapons, enemy types, arenas and more could be added with ease. But what about story content, or customisation options? Maybe even new gameplay modes?
Exactly what is set to come down the line is not yet known. However, you’d be a fool to bet against more content being added sooner rather than later.
