Fireproof Games has launched the highly anticipated Ghost Town for Meta Quest headsets, and of course our friends at 131XR were straight onto it. Is this spooky adventure worth your time and money? Check out the review below to find out!
What is Ghost Town?
Ghost Town is a single-player puzzle adventure VR game developed by Fireproof Games. It’s a linear story-driven experience that takes you through numerous different locales. Cast as Edith, a paranormal detective, your world is turned upside down when your brother goes missing.
Edith’s journey to find her brother begins with a visit to a remote Scottish island in the hope a gifted clairvoyant can provide some much-needed answers. As you continue, you’ll meet numerous interesting characters, each offering their own twist to the tale.
Ghost Town Review
As a heavily story-driven game, Ghost Town lives and dies on this characterisation. Thankfully, according to 131XR’s Ghost Town review (below), this element of the game is worthy of praise. Each of the characters you’ll meet are delivered with exceptionally high quality voice acting and animation. So too are the environments you’ll visit.
Conversely, the puzzling element of the game is rather simple at first, and takes quite some time to become interesting. It’s full of the familiar video game faire; look for clues in pictures on the wall, reveal the numbers to enter into a magic box and so on. As such, as evidenced in 131XR’s Ghost Town review, the game is not intended for an action experience, and much more bent towards the story element.
What’s Next for Fireproof Games?
Developer Fireproof Games made a name for their studio with the release of The Room, an experience that launched very early in the lifespan of modern VR. They also delivered Omega Agent way back on the Samsung Gear VR, which received significantly less praise.
It seems unlikely that Fireproof Games would turn away from VR at this point, especially when most signs point towards Ghost Town becoming a hit. Whether the studio will deliver more content for Ghost Town or move onto another title however, is not currently known.
