Deep Type Games’ Hellsplit Arena launched via Steam for PC VR way back in 2019. The game received a positive reaction upon launch, and was supported by the development team with continual updates. Now, in 2025, the game has arrived on Meta Quest. But can it deliver the same calibre of hellish combat as the PC edition? Check out 131XR’s Hellsplit Arena review to find out.

Go to Hell

Hellsplit Arena is a single-player combat-heavy action game. As the story goes, you heroically fought in a Middle-Ages war against some super bad guys. Things were going well. But then you died, and they weren’t going so well for you any more.

In the afterlife, you find yourself forced to engage in battles to the death. You’ll fight against reanimated corpses and skeletons, all the while earning money (Charon’s obols?) to procure new equipment. All manner of weaponry, armour and potions are available to you to take on the next stage of increasingly difficult bouts of undead combat.

Hellsplit Arena Review

The simple premise of Hellsplit Arena sets the scene for some pretty high quality VR combat. The dark tone of the game, similar to that of Grimlord, is very well presented. While the game does have some peculiar bugs and framerate issues at present, the production values on the whole are of a high quality.

According to 131XR, Hellsplit Arena doesn’t make the fun easy to reach. The game’s opening hour is a mess of lack of direction and assumptions of player knowledge. For example, when selecting a character the game gives you a bunch of symbols and numbers but doesn’t explain what they mean. It also assumes that you’re an experiences VR player and will know exactly where your weapons and potions are holstered, and how to use them.

Once these issues have been overcome however, you’ll find that Hellsplit Arena offers a thoroughly enjoyable dark fantasy combat simulation. Check out the full 131XR review of Hellsplit Arena in the video embedded below.

Post-Launch Support for Hellsplit Arena

So what’s coming next for Hellsplit Arena? Well, according to Deep Type Games, the PC VR version is set for a big update.

An official communication from the dev team states: “In spite of the solid age of Hellsplit: Arena, the developers intend to continue supporting their project. Soon after our release on Quest we plan to add following features:

  • New game mode “Sandbox”
  • Mods full support on Quest
  • New enemies and equipment”

While the addition of new enemies and equipment is to be expected, that mod support will undoubtedly excite many on Meta Quest.
