Back in 2018, Immersive VR Education released one of the best early examples of cinematic experiences that aimed to wow as well as educate, Titanic VR. Available for PCVR headsets via Steam, it has now come to light that a Meta Quest 3/3S version is on the way.

Titanic VR reborn

As spotted by Mixed, Immersive VR Education’s CEO David Whelan dropped an update on Titanic VR’s original Kickstarter to announce the news.

“It’s been eight years since you helped bring Titanic VR to life, and I’m thrilled to share that we’re now putting the finishing touches on the Meta Quest 3 and 3s version,” Whelan wrote. “It’s amazing how far standalone VR has come. Where once you needed a powerful gaming PC, you can now fully explore the Titanic shipwreck from anywhere on your Quest 3 or 3s. We’ve worked through countless challenges to make this port run and we can’t wait for you to experience it.”

The 2017 Kickstarter managed to raise just over €57k to bring the project to life, and it’s been 7 years since the last posted update.

An Immersive VR Experience

Titanic VR is a combination of diving simulator and immersive interactive story. Players are able to explore the famous wreck, with the studio utilising hyper realistic models to ensure authentic accuracy.

Player can learn about this historic tragedy from two perspectives during the story. The first is as Dr. Ethan Lynch, Associate Professor of Maritime Archaeology at the fictional University of Nova Scotia. Lynch heads a team to dive the wreck to look for clues and answer questions about that fateful night. Along the way players can recover items and complete missions to immerse themselves in the narrative.

The second part of the story places them in 1912 as one of the survivors. Thanks to eye-witness testimony and substantial research, Immersive VR Education built an historically accurate recreation of the event.

When does the Titanic set sail?

Currently, Whelan has yet to confirm when Titanic VR for Meta Quest 3/3S will be released. He does note that Kickstarter backers will “be receiving download keys in the coming weeks.” A “Coming Soon” page for the Horizon Store shouldn’t too far away then.

In the mean time, if you did back the campaign all those years ago and now own an Quest 3/3S, the studio is looking for 20 backers to help with testing. So keep your eyes peel for further updates.
