The success of 2011’s Temple Run launched an entirely new genre. The endless runner is considered a subgenre of the platform game, in which procedurally generated levels slowly increase the challenge. In the decade since many huge franchises have seen their own take on the formula, including Despicable Me‘s Minions and Lara Croft: Relic Run.
There has of course been all manner of copycat games and spin-offs, too. In the early days of VR, we had Infinity Runner from Wales Interactive. A nice take on the genre, but hardly a showcase for the medium. Today, Beyond Studios are offering their take on an XR endless runner with Runaways.
How to Play Runaways
Join Hank, the rebellious hombre with a heart of gold, as he ditches the gloop mines of ExHume 8 and finds himself smack dab in the middle of a tentacle-infested planet. His mission? Find the exit portal before he’s turned into a puddle of gloop, or worse. You must help Hank hurtle between two portals, dodging deadly traps and making lightning-fast choices to stay ahead of the Overlord’s grasp.
The game features fast-paced, frenetic gameplay. You must guide Hank through treacherous terrain by disarming traps, making split-second decisions, and boosting over gaps. So far, so endless runner. However, thanks to the unique nature of MR, Hank races through your very own space. The dynamically generated tracks adapt to whatever space you are in as you play.
Who are Beyond Studio?
Beyond Studio was founded in 2018 with a focus on social games with mass appeal. The studio has developed numerous XR experiences, including free-roam wireless multiplayer VR games. Beyond Studio was the first in the world to launch an eight player free-roam game on the Oculus Quest at Two Bit Circus, LA, in February 2020.
The studio’s second game in collaboration with Flufworld sold 10,500 copies in three minutes. A significant success for any XR studio. Beyond have also collaborated on other VR titles with Weta Workshop and Felix & Paul Studios.
Runaways Apple Vision Pro Debut
Runaways is available for Apple Vision Pro from today. There’s no word on the game supporting other XR platforms, though can’t see why a Meta Quest 3 version wouldn’t work!
