Super Spin Digital are promising the ‘juiciest beats in the universe’. We’re not entirely sure what that means, but VR players can get a free update to the existing Steam version of the game in July, 2024. What’s more, Spin Rhythm XD is also coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 with ‘full VR support’.

What is Spin Rhythm XD?

Spin Rhythm XD is an electronic music rhythm game. Clearly inspired by the Guitar Hero games, we’re looking at a DJ game that moves away from the clunky peripherals of DJ Hero. The game promotes fluid, analogue-inspired controls, stunning reactive backgrounds and fully hand-made levels.

You can spin to one of five difficulties, mastering rhythm and hand-eye coordination with a comprehensive selection of accessibility options including custom colors, track speeds, visuals, and more. It all seems a little Bop It! to us, but as ever, in VR it’s likely to become more than the sum of its parts. You’ll control each beat and motion with controller support for VR. On traditional platforms you use mouse and keyboard, DualSense (including the touchpad), Xbox controller, and for the PC-owning DJs out there, actual MIDI DJ turntables.

VR Support

“When it came to creating the ultimate rhythm game experience, we were excited to introduce Spin Rhythm XD to new consoles and VR headsets,“ said Dave Curro, co-founder of Super Spin Digital. “Music as a medium should be experienced by as many people in as many ways possible. Whether it’s chasing the perfect high score or indulging in a rich audio and visual experience with VR, we made Spin Rhythm XD for you.”

The development team seem pretty excited for the VR edition of the game. However, their communications on the matter have been a little confused. The press release singled out the SteamVR version, which is nice, but when discussing the PlayStation ports they simply stated it’s coming with ‘full VR support’. In the same release, PSVR 2 was mentioned, but not the original PlayStation VR. As such, we have to surmise that the PlayStation 4 version of the game will not support VR.

Alongside the new VR and PlayStation launches, developer Super Spin Digital partnered with Chillhop Music to deliver 10 new tracks and skins in the latest DLC, available on all released platforms. This brings the total amount of tracks up to over 60 ahead of the launch of the VR edition.

Will Spin Rhythm XD‘s VR support be enough to make it one of the best VR rhythm action games? We’ve only got a few months until we find out…

The VR edition of Spin Rhythm XD will also launch on 9th July, 2024. It has been confirmed for PSVR 2 and SteamVR, with the latter stated as being a free update.
