The 7 Best VR Roomscale Games

Eye of the Temple image

Whenever you set up a VR headset you have to create a play space. That’s so you know where real objects like walls are so you don’t suddenly smack them. And most VR games use this area in some way. From giving you enough space to swing your arms to sidestepping a projectile. But how many actually maximise your allotted play area, or go one step further and make it seem much bigger than it is? That’s where these best VR roomscale games come in.

The Best VR Roomscale Games

When we talk about roomscale games we want an experience that forces us to make a physical decision. Not merely a single step or a simple interactive item. The whole area needs to be an interactive zone, one we can seemingly get lost in even though it might only be 2m x 2m.

It must also be mentioned that we’re not including mixed reality games in this selection. Mostly because it opens up a whole new world of possibilities beyond conventional roomscale. For now, this is about virtual worlds and a immersive and massive they can become.

Most of the games below are for Meta Quest headsets. Primarily because the standalone tech has allowed developers to think more openly about parameters of roomscale gameplay.

Eye of the Temple

Make sure you’ve cleared a nice 2m x 2m area for this Indiana Jones-style adventure in a trap-filled temple!

“Embark on an adventure to explore a vast and treacherous temple and uncover the ancient legend of the Eye. Keep your balance as you step between moving blocks, dodging hazardous traps and solving environmental puzzles with just your torch and whip in hand.”

Space Pirate Trainer DX

The original VR wave shooter, Space Pirate Trainer upgraded to the DX version a couple of years ago. This added a huge laser tag-style gameplay mode you need to try.

“ARENA is a glimpse at the future of VR. Transform any indoor space into an incredible VR arena as you play a manic game of hide and seek with blasters. You’ll need to find a large open space, so start scouting for empty halls, tennis courts, and basketball courts!”

Tea For God

Available through Quest’s App Lab, Tea For God is one of those hidden indie gems.

“Tea For God is a VR adventure that uses impossible spaces with procedural generation to allow players infinite movement within their own room. Customizable gameplay can be anything between a relaxing long walk, an intense arcade shooter (checkpoint-based) and a roguelite shooter-explorer.”

Richie’s Plank Experience

It’s an oldie but definitely a goldie. Make sure you have a real plank of wood nearby.

“Richie’s Plank Experience was designed to invoke the strongest possible emotions in the shortest possible time. Test your fear of heights or entertain your friends and family as they walk the plank 80 stories high and experience terrifying real fear, knees weak and palms sweaty!”

Racket: Nx

Like squash/tennis and pickleball on steroids, clear the entire house for Racket: Nx!

The game has been available for several years now, dropping players into a futuristic arena for a game like no other. Played inside a giant glass dome, Racket: Nx requires precision and power in equal measure, as you aim for targets on the walls. They all need to be removed to progress but some are more dangerous than others. Plus they’re all around you!

Gadgeteer

“Gadgeteer is a physics-based VR puzzle game where you build chain reaction machines to solve fun, intricate puzzles. Your machines will use gadgets to launch, bump, twist, and turn—creating chain reactions that may even end up tearing apart the fabric of space-time.”

There’s a campaign with 60 puzzles to get you started. Then there’s the Maker Mode which is where the roomscale functionality really kicks in. Within your designated play space build any chain reaction machine you like. The bigger the area the bigger the machine!

traVRsal

Not one but multiple roomscale worlds to explore!

“traVRsal lets you move using your own feet. Build & play a constantly growing collection of exciting free-roaming experiences right in your living room to experience a new level of immersion. Adventure through procedurally created magical dungeons filled with puzzles, traps and enemies. Climb mysterious towers. Visit stunning galleries. And much more! Become the best in each world for your place on the global leaderboard.”
