Crossfire: Sierra Squad Flies the VR Flag at Summer Games Fest

The Crossfire series is in a bit of a quandary right now. The original game, launched back in 2007, remains hugely popular in China and South America. The recent Xbox Series X exclusive, CrossfireX, launched in a poor state and survived only around a year before being shutdown last month. And now we come to the VR exclusive Crossfire: Sierra Squad. Suffice to say, hopes aren’t too high.

There are many FPS experiences in VR. It’s a genre that easily lends itself to immersion, placing the player in the literal digital shoes of the protagonist. And because of that, Crossfire: Sierra Squad has much competition. In order to get out in front the game benefitted from a fantastic looking trailer at the Summer Games Fest. There’s no denying it was impressive. But at the same time, only the PSVR 2 version was mentioned. This is odd, because the game is also coming to PC VR.

To make matters worse, Crossfire: Sierra Squad was the only VR game in the showcase.

Crossfire: Sierra Squad Gameplay

In this latest edition of the Crossfire series, you are the leader of an elite paramilitary fireteam within the Global Risk organization. As the story narrative will explain to you in-game, during your mission you will unexpectedly tangle with the rival Black List organization and find out that there is something very big at play which calls for your expertise. Players will battle a variety of enemies in a search for the truth. Take to the ground and prove why you were selected as the leader of the most feared special unit in existence: Sierra Squad.

The game features a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Developer Smilegate promises 50 squad missions (single-player or two-player co-op), 13 campaign missions (single-player) and Horde Mode (up to 4-player co-op). That’s a lot of content, and a step aside from the multiplayer gameplay the series is known for.

39 types of weapons including pistols, rifles, grenades and sniper rifles give you plenty of options to dispatch 17 types of enemies. You’ll also engage with heavy artillery like helicopters and LAV’s.
