You only need to take one quick look at Meta Quest’s most popular chart to see that free social games dominate the space. One of those is Animal Company, one of the few Gorilla Tag clones to find great success. Now, developer Wooster Games has announced that Animal Company is heading to SteamVR this month.

What is Animal Company?

As mentioned, Animal Company takes part of its inspiration from Gorilla Tag, utilising the same physical, arm-based movement system alongside its low-poly visual style. However, where Animal Company differs is that its gameplay is based on 2023’s Lethal Company. This is a flatscreen co-op horror where players have to work together to collect resources, fill quotas and get back to their ship before night creeps in.

Animal Company, is less structured, more chaotic, but still filled with nasty creatures that’ll have you running for your life. Currently still in Early Access since 2024, the game has proven to be incredibly popular, garnering 200k ratings and almost 10k reviews on Meta Quest.

For the Steam launch this month, Animal Company will retain its Early Access status, with Wooster Games not planning an official launch until 2027 at the earliest. The game will retain parity with the Quest version to ensure cross-platform compatibility, featuring 10+ maps, 30+ monsters, and 300+ items.

The studio notes that: “We have so many more ideas to fill the game with new adventures, scares, and fun, and we take the community’s feedback very seriously as we scope out what a finished version of the game looks like.”

Launch Details

Animal Company is coming to Steam for PCVR headsets on 21st May 2026. While there has been no mention of a price, considering the game is free on Quest, XRSource would expect the same for Steam to maximise player count.
