The art of cross-stitching isn’t something usually synonymous with the latest high-tech gadgets. Yet that’s exactly what developer Coal Car Studio aims to combine with its upcoming mixed reality app, Cross Craft for Meta Quest.

What is Cross Craft?

As mentioned, Cross Craft is all about teaching you the fine art of cross stitching using mixed reality. Supporting beginners and experienced stitchers alike, the app works by offering guided tutorials with simple on-screen steps as users work with real fabric. With a variety of designs to choose from, tool options are wide ranging, from the colour of the thread to tracking progress and fixing mistakes.

Crucially, because you’ll have cross-stitching paraphernalia in your hands, Cross Craft uses hand tracking throughout. Helping you easily navigate through lessons and select interactive tools without having to grab a controller.

You will, of course, need to pre-buy all the cross-stitching materials before you start, with Cross Craft even helping with that. For beginners, Coal Car Studio recommends the following:

  • Aida fabric (any count works for beginners)
  • Embroidery hoop (we recommend a 6–8 inch hoop to start)
  • Embroidery floss (we recommend 4 colours to start)
  • Tapestry needle (size 24 recommended)
  • Small scissors

Once you have the app installed, head to the app’s website and go to ‘Get Shopping List’. You can then scan a QR code with your Quest that’ll list all the required items for your current project.

Launch Details

Currently, Cross Craft is listed for a “Winter 2026” release on the Horizon Store. So XRSource isn’t sure if that means early this year or towards the end of the year. Even so, you can actually get hold of the beta version of the game by heading to its Discord server and requesting access.

If you’ve got a needle and thread gathering dust, this might be just the opportunity to pick the hobby back up.

Mixed Reality Learning

Cross Craft is just the latest in a growing lineup of educational apps and games that use mixed reality. You have apps like PianoVision that can teach you how to play the piano, Stencil VR offers MR drawing, whilst Immerrock offers guitar lessons. Or you can learn how to DJ with Tribe XR.

There’s massive potential for immersive education to help those who may struggle with normal educational practices, delivering hands-on advice in a creative way.
