Coffee Moth Games released Neon Overdrive on SteamVR last month, and now a free demo version is available. However, at the same time, a release on the Meta Store has been delayed. The developer has stated that this is due to “build issues” that the team is currently “trying to resolve with Meta”.

A Roguelike VR Shooter Built Around Replayability

Neon Overdrive draws clear inspiration from 1980s science fiction, arcade games, and synth-driven soundtracks. This a fast-paced, procedurally generated roguelike shooter built specifically for room-scale VR, where players face off against waves of mechanical enemies known as Exo Bots.

At its core, Neon Overdrive is structured around repeatable runs. Each playthrough offers new combinations of abilities, perks, and challenges. The game features seven unlockable character classes, each with distinct weapons and playstyles. These classes encourage experimentation, whether players prefer direct combat, mobility-focused tactics, or more defensive approaches.

Enemy difficulty scales dynamically through a system known as ‘Overdrive’ difficulty. As players progress, enemies gain new visual designs, stronger statistics, and upgraded abilities. Boss encounters are designed to test how well players have built their character during a run.

Neon Overdrive SteamVR Demo

Coffee Moth Games has described Neon Overdrive as a tribute to classic sci-fi properties such as The Terminator, RoboCop, and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. These influences appear through visual design, tone, and environmental details rather than direct imitation. Players will encounter satirical megacorporations, tongue-in-cheek references, and environmental easter eggs aimed at fans of retro science fiction. And you can experience all of this in a free demo version of Neon Overdrive available now via SteamVR.

The demo provides a sample of the game’s core mechanics, visual style, and combat systems. It’s available now at the official Steam Store page for the game.

Neon Overdrive delay

Meta Quest Store Delay

Although Neon Overdrive is currently playable through SteamVR with a Meta Quest headset, the Meta Store release has been delayed. As can be seen in the image above, the delay is due to ‘build issues’, which the developer says it is actively trying to resolve in coordination with Meta. No revised release date for the Meta Store version has been announced at this time.
