Back in the days of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, stationary wave shooters were a staple of the release schedule. While these games have waned in recent years, the odd one or two do still appear. The most recent being Coffee Moth Games’ Neon Overdrive, available now for SteamVR headsets.

A Wave Shooter in Overdrive

Whilst Neon Overdrive’s core gameplay revolves around shooting down waves of Exo Bots, the vibrant game adds a lot more to the setup. Inspired by 80s sci-fi classics like Terminator and RoboCop as well as games like Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, Neon Overdrive has been designed to provide a fast-paced, procedurally generated roguelike experience.

With a centrally mounted gun at your disposal, there are seven unlockable character classes, each with its own unique abilities. Create dynamic builds utilising over 40 perks to mix and match during each run. Dual-wield lasers, rain missiles from above, or tank entire swarms as you progress through the levels, encountering enemies with new looks, tougher stats, and upgraded abilities.

Naturally, no 80s-inspired shooting fest is complete without some suitable synthwave music. Coffee Moth Games has not only created their own original beats, but they’ve also licensed music from Jeremiah Kane’s album All or Nothing.
