Board game creator Brueh Games and video game developer YarnCat Games have revealed that their videogame adaptation of Keep the Heroes Out! will launch next month for PC and Switch. However, more importantly, the pair has also confirmed that a Meta Quest version is in development, alongside an edition for Xbox platforms.
What is Keep the Heroes Out!?
The original board game version of Keep the Heroes Out! was a massive success, selling over 70,000 copies since its launch in 2022. Subsequently, Brueh Games launched a Kickstarter campaign to adapt the board game to a videogame. That crowdfunding effort raised 22x its target, allowing for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and VR adaptations to the game to enter development.
“When I launched the tabletop version of Keep the Heroes Out! the response was phenomenal. The board game community thoroughly embraced it, but there was one question that kept popping up: ‘will there be a digital version?'” said Luís Brueh, Founder of Brueh Games. “Well now there is, allowing players to play with their friends remotely or embark on skirmishes against an AI opponent.”
How to Play Keep the Heroes Out!
Keep the Heroes Out! is an asymmetric, cooperative dungeon defense game for 1-4 players. You play as the monsters protecting their hard-earned treasures against invading hordes of “heroes” trying to steal it. This digital rendition of Keep the Heroes Out! offers the same asymmetric, co-op dungeon defense gameplay as its tabletop counterpart with a bevy of added extras.
Your goal as a team is to survive going through the Guild deck two times, protecting the treasures in each room. If the main treasure is taken, the game ends in defeat. But if you manage to protect your treasures for long enough, you all win. Monsters may die, but you can always bring them back to the dungeon, so you are never eliminated from the game. However, once the treasure is gone, it’s gone forever.
The digital game aims to bring the tabletop experience faithfully to life. It uses the same art style and gameplay, only now being that the computer controls the nasty heroes invading our lair. This means you can play solo against the AI or remotely with your friends online. Furthermore, YarnCat Games has built a tutorial to help onboard new players.
Keep the Heroes Out! Demo & Launch Plans
A demo version of Keep the Heroes Out! is available to play now. This includes the aforementioned tutorial and the first stage of the game. However, it’s currently only available via Steam.
The PC and Nintendo Switch editions of the game will launch on 9th December, 2025. The Xbox and Meta Quest versions are set to follow thereafter, though no specific release date has yet been announced. Additionally, it seems rather odd that the game is coming to both PC and Meta Quest, yet no PC VR compatibility has been announced. Time will tell if PC VR players can get the dungeon co-op on later.
