Like many of you, XR Source is a big fan of bold, brash, futuristic Japanese games. They have a design style and ethos that Western developers struggle to replicate. The latest to grace VR headsets comes from veteran team Thirdverse, with the action-packed Soul Covenant hitting PSVR 2, Meta Quest and PCVR headsets tomorrow.
Thirdverse is the team behind Swords of Gargantua, Altair Breaker and X8, so they’re well-versed in physical combat experiences. And Soul Covenant is certainly that, taking place in a near-future, desolate Japan where humanity engages in a war against the machines.
“In the near future, the world is under control of a quantum artificial intelligence known as “Adam,” attempting to assume the role of a god,” the synopsis explains. “Adam believes that the role of god is to be an object of awe — one of overwhelming fear. The mech weapons known as “Deus Ex Machina,” feared as mechanical gods, launch a global invasion, slaughtering everyone who refuses to obey.”
Saving humanity…again
You take on the role of an Avatar, an enhanced human tasked with defending the last human stronghold, Tokyo Ark. This means taking on hordes of bizarre robotic enemies and giant bosses. To do this you need some weapons, and Soul Covenant provides a cool-looking arsenal.
Everything is melee-based, from giant scythes to chain swords and hammers. Some are smaller and can be dual-wielded whilst others require both hands. Each has its own characteristics including reach and power. Furthermore, every weapon can transform, giving it two combat styles to switch between.
Soul Covenant arrives on 18th April for PSVR 2, Meta Quest and PCVR headsets via Steam. For Quest owners, there’s still time to benefit from a 10% pre-order discount.
