In the summer of 2025, zombie fans were treated to a double bill of undead horror. Rebellion released Zombie Army VR, while Saber Interactive launched World War Z VR. Both immersive editions of flatscreen titles had one crucial difference: Zombie Army VR had co-op multiplayer. Unfortunately, Rebellion has now confirmed the co-op functionality is to be no more.
What happened to Co-op?
In a recent blog post, the studio lays all the blame squarely at Unity’s door, saying: “Zombie Army VR’s co-operative play servers will be shut down at the end of March, as a result of Unity’s phased exit from the Multiplay Game Server Hosting Service. The single player campaign will be unaffected.”
Until that time, the co-op mode is still available, so get your fill while you can. Towards the end of March, Rebellion will be releasing a patch to remove the option. You may also be wondering about gameplay progression and save data from in co-op. That’s a bit murkier, with the team adding: “We are still investigating game save data but it [sic] our aim is to protect the integrity of the save data with no loss of progress.”
Zombie Army still lives
Naturally, this is going to be a major blow to Zombie Army VR fans, especially if you’ve recently purchased the title. While the solo campaign is an enjoyable, albeit predictable romp, it was the co-op mode that gave the game longevity. I think we can all agree that it’s far more enjoyable blasting Nazi zombies with a friend to laugh with than without.
Furthermore, it makes rival World War Z VR a far more appealing prospect. As XRSource previously mentioned in its review, the best aspect of the flatscreen version of World War Z VR was its four-player co-op. Without it, the game felt hamstrung. It was easy to recommend Zombie Army VR for its co-op, and World War Z VR for the huge zombie waves. Soon, that distinction will be no more.
Zombie Army VR Review
Zombie games in VR have been prevalent for years, so it was great to see one of the biggest video game franchises shuffle into VR. Even though it received critical feedback from players at launch, our colleagues at 131XR found a perfectly serviceable, although linear, campaign, filled with historically accurate weapons, manual reloading mechanics and the always enjoyable X-Ray Kill Cam.
