Have you ever wanted loads of spiders running around your house? The answer is likely no, but with the power of mixed reality on Meta Quest, you soon can. Developer VirtualGo is preparing to launch its next MR title in February, a survival shooter across realities called MissionRift.

Mixed Reality Mayhem

There is a growing number of games for Meta Quest that are turning entire homes into MR play spaces. Titles like Espire: MR Missions that offer a first-person shooter experience, where enemies pop out from behind furniture and doors. While games like Stay: Forever Home mixed both MR gaming with VR worlds.

Well, MissionRift combines both of these elements in one. On the one side, you can run around (we’d advise walking) your home using a variety of weapons to blast an assortment of spiders (yes, we weren’t kidding). But you can also open portals that’ll take you into virtual parallel realms to fight enemies (not just spiders). Thus extending the game space beyond your normal four walls.

MissionRift Gameplay

So MissionRift is an action-packed FPS. It uses a custom mapping system to scan your space, allowing spiders to run up walls whilst the portals into the virtual realms still know the physical areas of your playspace. It’s then time to grab a gun and defend your home.

The game will offer three modes: Mission, Survival and Sandbox. The Mission Mode is MissionRift’s core experience, offering multiple chapters, objectives, set pieces and enemies. As mentioned, spiders form a core part of the enemy contingent (arachnophobic beware!) but you’ll also encounter soldiers and various monsters along the way too.

Survival mode is, as you’d expect, having to fight off waves of enemies for as long as possible. In the Sandbox mode, however, you’ll be able to explore MissionRift’s multiple realities at your leisure. As you might expect, some are far more hostile than others.

Who is VirtualGo?

VirtualGO is a specialist in MR gaming. The studio has created a number of different mixed reality apps that you may already be familiar with. 2022’s FPS Enhanced Reality is a similarly action-oriented game, a tactical FPS where you fight soldiers, robots, and drones throughout your home. For horror fans, there’s Hauntify, turning your house into a haunted home, with ten terrifying spirits to encounter.
